Coin & Clover
The act of cutting through an object emulates the concept of Yin and Yang. Yin and Yang is how opposite forces can be complementary or interconnected. The connected coin geometric pattern or [连钱纹 liánqiánwén] visualises the co-existence of a coin and a clover. The coin relates to aspects of Chinese Daoism practices and the clover refers to the design of British screen blocks. The motifs exists simultaneously and offer a perspective on a conversation across two distinctive symbols.
Coin & Clover focus on easing the boundaries of cross-cultural communication through openwork ceramics and digital fabrication processes such as laser-cutting and 3D printing. By cutting through these objects, they physically inscribe both an absence and presence of acknowledging one’s cultural identity.
